Character.ai Removed Disney Characters

Following a report that users had violated their Terms of Service, Character.ai announced on September 25, 2025, that certain characters would be removed from the platform.

They attributed the removal of the characters to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which prohibits the online circulation of copyrighted content.

The United States Congress passed the DMCA in 1998 to prevent copyright infringement in electronic media. If these laws are broken, there may be criminal or civil penalties, which include jail time of up to five years or a substantial fine of hundreds to thousands of dollars.

It’s unclear how many characters were removed, but many copyrighted Disney IPs were taken down. When and which characters would be terminated were not disclosed by Character.ai. Iron Man, Captain America, Quicksilver, Doctor Strange, and Mr. Fantastic are just a few examples of such characters.

This comes after other third-party DC, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones characters were deleted in November and December of 2025 due to copyright laws.

Users were not notified in advance of the new development via email or other platforms, like Instagram. Their website and app featured a pop-up statement announcing the news with no further details.
